A Clockwork
Orange by Anthony Burgess
Excellent, engaging writing. Violent. Meaning about human choice and what makes us human
and can we be controlled. If you're planning to study Russian, this book gives you an
excellent start on basic vocabulary (link my list). |

Things Fall
Apart by Chinua Achebe
Easy and very interesting reading. See what happens when cultures shift and you get left
behind. This book will leave you pondering what Okonkwo could--or couldn't have--done
differently. Related Student Paper "Learning
from Life's Experiences" |

The Count of
Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
This contemporary of Victor Hugo (Les Miserables) is also an excellent writer. The
plot twists and turns better than even modern thrillers (far better!). Pay
attention to the names to follow it better. The plot leads you through many enduring
themes--justice, jealousy, dishonesty, revenge, love, choice, power, etc.... You'll be
adding this one to your list of all-time favorite reads. |

Gone but not
Forgotten by Shaun Roundy
Spencer's attempt to write a philosophy paper on the Meaning of Life didn't turn out so
well, but life dishes out the lessons you need when you're ready for them. Annetta teaches
him about Love and Courage and his life will never be the same. |
