Give Education A+ Chance

The hottest topics in education should always center around making education as effective as possible.  This includes:
» Teaching Better. Even teachers need training, motivation, and rewards. The educational system needs better ways to remove inefective teachers and attract and retain the good ones.
» Studying & Learning Better. Much of the responsibility of learning lies with the student. The system sometimes destroys students' natural love of learning.
» Education on Education. While everyone pays lip service, very few understand the true value and importance of education. Is this what keeps teachers underpaid and schools underfunded? Is this what keeps teachers and students unmotivated?
Are You a Good Student?
» Are you excited about learning? This could apply to absolutely anything.
» Are you taking the time to learn? Anything at all. From watching an informative TV show, to reading a few pages in a book regularly, to taking a walk and observing the trees, buildings, or people.
» Can you see the difference education makes in your life? The sharper and more active your mind, the more you should be able to enjoy your life. Look around and prove it to yourself. Education also creates opportunities--in the job market, in personal relationships, and in your spare time.
» Are you a critical thinker? Critical thinking skills help you reach your goals,   resolve problems more quickly, and even get along better with others.

Other Teaching Topics you should consider:

Why do We have Grading? What are Teachers' responsibilities? What are Students' Responsibilities?

Other stuff I haven't revised yet:

  • Teach your students the value of education. More than any other profession, the future of teaching lies in teachers' hands. If the students that pass through our classrooms leave with a love of learning and appreciation of our educational system, then we'll finally see education's needs met. This can happen within five years of high school graduation of such students. Click here for ideas on how to make this happen.
  • Make students do pages. It gets them unblocked--gets their minds moving past barriers. It teaches problem solving skills and independence and self-reliance. Writing promotes self knowledge, helps them catch fire about education. For many, it will become a life-long habit. No grading based on performance, no judgement on this. Don't even read it, just check that they do it.
  • Recommended reading: The Art and Craft of Teaching, Margaret Morganroth Gullette, editor. Harvard-Danforth Center for Teaching and Learning.  Especially if you're a new teacher, this book offers tons of great ideas and information to motivate you and make you a quality and effective teacher.

Give Teachers a Chance

What happens when we pay teachers such low wages?

  • They burn out.  Many teachers hold more than one job, just to get by.  The additional stress keeps them from focusing on their teaching to the extent they would like, and they burn out much more quickly.
  • Many of the best teachers seek other careers.  Why wouldn't they when they can make 2-10 times the wages of a teacher?

When we don't take care of our Teachers, we shoot ourselves in the foot.
