Get What You Want!

Want to try out a new philosophy for life? Try getting what you want. Sure it sounds greedy, but that's only true if you want to be greedy. You could want anything you want--as a matter of fact, you do want anything you want. But you need to understand a little if you want to make this work for you in life.

First, wanting is not the same thing as wishing. Wishing involves passive desires, things you either don't really think you can get or things that you're not willing to work for. Wanting involves what some have called "intentions." That's when you really want something and you're willing to figure out what it takes to get it and to go through with it.

Second, you can't go about getting whatever you want the way you did when you were three. Pouting and complaining will get you nowhere. Instead, be mature enough to take on responsibility for yourself. Realize that everything in life is a process, and if you take the right steps, then you'll get the right outcome.

Third, don't waste your time doubting your abilities or that anything is impossible. Just learn the steps and take them. There's practically nothing you can't do or get if you want it bad enough. How do you know when you want it enough? When you're learning and doing what it takes to get it.

And why, you ask, is this idea on a CD ROM about writing? Because it is central to your job as a writer!!  No matter what you write, you have a purpose, remember? If you want to accomplish that purpose, then you'd better know what it takes: know your inherent barriers and your audience, because those will tell you what it takes to get what you want, to accomplish your purpose.

But anyway, who says we have to only talk about writing here? Everything you learn about life and...well, anything, will make you a better writer. Like it or not, you're enrolled in the University of Life. Make the best of it.
