City Heart

Ah, the call of urban life--
Like wearing your heart on the outside.
The hum and beat of the city street
The kids in the park and the muggy heat.

I don't know what drives the pace
Past concrete curbs
And the dusty trees,
Or what feeds the pulse in their green-brown leaves,
But its blood runs thick through my arteries.

Sometimes I think that there's so much life
Stacked high and deep and wide--
How can I help feeling up inside
When I can go anywhere in my car--
I hop on the highway for CPR,
Get lost in a crowd or walk in the park
Stare at the lights shining after dark.
Grand intimations of future days,
The mystery,
The rat race,
The human maze,
The scent in the air from the baker's knife
If you ask me, I'll opt for the city life.
